Sennelier History
In the 1880's a determined young chemist opened an art shop opposite the Louvre in central Paris. Fascinated by the new theories in colour put forward at that time, Gustave Sennelier was able to discuss and experiment to give his patrons new formulas, first in tempera, gouache and oil paint for Renoir, Degas, Cezanne, and Monet and later in soft pastel, where he created special colours just for Degas, Cezanne, and Monet and later in soft pastel, where he created special colours just for Degas.

In 1949, the Sennelier shop created a product specially for Pablo Picasso. He wanted colors he could use on any surface, without first having to do special preparation or coating. Henri Sennelier, Gustave's son, created the first oil pastel, a stick of colored chalk that is waxy rather than powdery.
